Worked well - until it stopped working July 2, 2009 M. Greene (FL USA) We purchased Toshiba SD-P91S DVD player for our 5 year old to watch on driving trips. It worked well for about 6-8 months - playing approx. 40 hours of video. Now it has stopped working. So far, Toshiba's Customer Service folks have not been too helpful. I am hoping for better results from them as I continue to follow-up.
DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK!!! June 29, 2009 Dr. James S. Klutts (Iowa City, IA United States) We bought two of these units for our kids a little less than one year ago. One of them has worked just fine, however, the second one is a total lemon. If you read other reviews on here, you'll see that there is a pretty high prevalence of poorly functioning models of this player out there. If it works, they're fine, but if they don't...
So, the bad player first wouldn't charge or even turn on when the battery was installed, but the battery itself was fine as it worked when I put it in the functioning unit. This happened about 6 months after purchasing, and it was due to a faulty board. The warranty on this unit is not very good...they'll pay for parts and labor for only 90 days. After 90d, they'll only pay for parts through the first year. You then get tagged with a $59 labor charge plus shipping to get it repaired. OK, so we got it fixed and it came back working fine...for about 2 weeks, after which it would no longer read any DVD. It just kept giving us the message "Insert DVD", no matter which DVD we try to insert. I called Toshiba and complained that I shouldn't have to pay anything to get this repaired a 2nd time or that they should send me a replacement model. Well, all you get is some random representative that is contracted out and doesn't even work for the company. I got "Well, that's Toshiba's warranty", and absolutely no resolution or anything resembling customer service. I'm probably not going to send it in and waste another $70, and I will never buy a Toshiba product again.
I hope this helps.
It started well but ended badly. June 17, 2009 P. Mitchell (Gurnee, IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was very impressed with it for the first few weeks, Sound is great even without head set and picture very nice. But then I noticed that no matter what setting I set the video for it would rarely ever do a full screen even when the DVD was formatted for full screen. Then.... it started stopping and saying OPEN but the lid was closed so when I added light pressure to the lid on the left side it would work but when I would let go it would say open again. It is impossible to get Toshiba to help over the phone as their system is made to avoid you and route you in a circle with their automated system. SO I tried on line and got the same thing until I found one area and they requested more info and still waiting for help.
GO with a Sony as they are more reliable and help desk is much better.
Piece of junk June 1, 2009 Michael Maiman (San Mateo, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This worked fine for a few (less than 20) hours. Now several DVD's are not playable, sputtering and skipping several minutes. These DVD's work fine in my non-portable player. The unit is used on my desk for educational DVD's, not on the road. I would like to use it without headphones but the volume is so low and the sound so bad that I can barely hear it in a quiet room (and can barely hear it above the drone-like sound of the player's motor). A pair of computer speakers helps immensely. Save yourself grief and money and don't buy this thing.
Great Service May 28, 2009 Charles W. Bowers (Maryland USA) Received product in great condition and in a timely manner would do business with this vendor again.
